A record amount of 26 billion euros (around $31,7 billion) has been invested last year (2020) in the European offshore wind sector, according to the latest figures from industry body WindEurope.

Europe is a major player in offshore wind power. The world’s first offshore wind farm, in waters near the Danish island of Lolland, was commissioned in 1991.

The Monday’s announcement said the investments will finance a total of 7.1 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind capacity, with projects set to be developed and built over the next few years.

Europe’s offshore wind power now stands at a little over 25 GW of capacity, with 42% of this located in U.K. waters. Long term, the EU, which the U.K. left in January 2020, is targeting 300 GW of offshore wind power by the middle of this century. U.K. want their offshore wind capacity to hit 40 GW by the year 2030.

Hydrogen will play a major role in the global energy markets over the coming decades. Taking away a large chunk of oil demand, according to Bank of America’s head of global thematic research.

“We believe that hydrogen is going to take 25% of all oil demand by 2050,” he went on to state, adding that oil was “facing headwinds left and right. Yes, we’ll still need it, yes, it’s still going to be around, but the market share of oil is going to plummet.”

Hopes for hydrogen

Hydrogen is another area starting to gain momentum. The EU has laid out plans to install 40 gigawatts of renewable hydrogen electrolyzers and produce as much as 10 million metric tons of renewable hydrogen by the year 2030.

Hydrogen can be produced in a number of ways. One includes using electrolysis, with an electric current splitting water into oxygen and hydrogen. If the electricity used in the process comes from a renewable source such as wind then it’s termed “green” or “renewable” hydrogen.

Changing times?

In the last few years, governments and companies around the world have announced goals to reduce their carbon footprint and move away from fossil fuels. Both the UK and EU are targeting net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

In a sign of how things may be starting to change, a number of energy majors — who, it should be noted, remain big players in oil and gas — are now ramping up investment in renewables such as solar and wind.

The ministry of Energy in Azerbaijan has announced that is has started commercial natural gas supplies to Europe via the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), beginning its push into the European market dominated by Russia. The project has been supported by the European commission to reduce dependence on Russia.

At this time Russia controls 34% of Europe’s gas market and plans to increase gas export to Europe, including Turkey, to 183 billion cubic meters (bcm) next year from the 171-172 bcm expected this year. Annual consumption in Europe stand at around 500 bcm, most of it used in power generation.

TAP is part of the $40 billion Southern Gas Corridor, stretching 3,500 km from Azerbaijan to Europe and drawing from Azerbaijan’s giant Shah Deniz II field in the Caspian Sea.

Azerbaijan targets to supply the European gas market with 10 bcm of gas per year, including 8 bcm to Italy and a combined 2 bcm to Greece and Bulgaria. It already supplies gas to Turkey.

In 2020 offshore decommissioning has taken a nosedive, although there are encouraging signs of recovering into 2021 and beyond. Over the next decade forecasts suggest offshore decommissioning work valued at somewhere around £15 billion will be performed in the UK alone. Global forecasts is expected to be several times higher.

Initially it was anticipated that 202o would be a year of further growth in the UK market. OGUK’s Decommissioning Insight 2019 report had predicted that 62 fields would host decommissioning activity this year, we all know that reality has been very different.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the low oil price have been the reasons for this years decommissioning nosedive. COVID-19 made it challenging to execute projects, will the low oil price changed the economic landscape against which operators make strategic decisions.

It is suggested that around 70% of the planned offshore decommissioning projects have been deferred and 10% cancelled, only 20% has been gone ahead like planned.

The outlook for the service sector in 2021 is looking good. As much of the work has only been deferred, and signals that indicates that offshore decommissioning activities will increase notably in 2021 – especially when we can finally see some light at the end of the COVID-19 crisis tunnel.

In recent months you may have noticed changes to our new corporate identity. Our renewed fleet, new on-site services containers and new carrier carts, were a signal of things to come.

The latest step in our transformation to the new corporate identity has taken place. The head office of Patriot International, located in Dordrecht, has been given the new corporate identity, our other offices will follow soon.

With fresh new colors and visual elements, Patriot International has set his sights on the future in which more exciting developments will take place.

On October 5th 3 new students have started with our S.P.E.A.R. program.

All candidates will follow the same program for the first 9 months and will be assessed accordingly. Upon successful completion of the first 9 months, the candidates will have the option to choose which of the 4 disciplines they wish to pursue for the remaining 3 months of the program.

During the 3 months advanced training they’ll pick 1 out of 4 disciplines to become a Workshop Technician, Project Engineer, Sales Engineer or Site Services Technician. In the future more positions can be put in the program.

At the end of the training they’ll be placed in a permanent position judged on what is best suited for them.
