STATS Pipe End Test Plugs I-PEP™ and E-PEP™
Install temporary test caps on plain-end pipe for efficient hydrostatic testing without welding and subsequently removing conventional end caps.
Temporary pipe-end isolation for hydrostatic testing
STATS Pipe End Plugs provide a fast and efficient way to install temporary test caps on plain-end pipe during construction, fabrication and pressure-testing activities.
The tools eliminate the need to weld conventional end caps onto the pipe and cut them off after testing. This reduces preparation and remedial work while helping teams complete hydrostatic testing more efficiently.
The range comprises two complementary products:
- I-PEP™ Internal Pipe End Plug, which fits inside and grips the pipe bore
- E-PEP™ External Pipe End Plug, which fits over and grips the outside of the pipe
Both configurations use a grip-lock assembly and high-performance elastomeric sealing to create a secure test boundary.
Key benefits
- Reduces the cost associated with welding and removing temporary end caps
- Shortens preparation and completion time for hydrostatic testing
- Installed and activated in a matter of minutes
- Test pressure keeps the locks and seals self-energised for fail-safe operation
- Non-destructive installation avoids damage to the internal or external pipe wall
- Even grip loading helps prevent localised pipe deformation and stress
- Large-section elastomer seals provide reliable sealing over repeated operating cycles
- Through-port allows the test system to be filled, pressurised or vented
- Suitable for horizontal, vertical and inclined pipework
- Available for rental with the required ancillary equipment
E-PEP™ External Pipe End Plug
The patented E-PEP™ is fitted over the pipe end and hydraulically activated.
Hydraulic set pressure engages a mechanical lock assembly around the pipe’s outside diameter while simultaneously energising an elastomeric seal against its inside diameter. This allows the pipework to be tested with minimal preparation and without remedial work after the tool is removed.
A through-port allows the system to be filled, pressurised and vented through the plug.
To remove the E-PEP™, hydraulic pressure is applied to the unset circuit. This retracts the lock assembly and releases the seal, allowing the tool to be removed from the pipe end.
The E-PEP™ range covers pipe sizes from 3 inches to 36 inches.
I-PEP™ Internal Pipe End Plug
The I-PEP™ is inserted into the pipe bore and grips the pipe internally.
On hydraulically activated models, set pressure engages a mechanical lock assembly against the internal pipe diameter while energising an elastomeric seal. This creates a secure test boundary with minimal preparation of the pipe’s internal surface.
The integrated through-port allows the system to be filled, pressurised or vented through the tool. Hydraulic pressure applied to the unset circuit releases the lock and seal after testing.
Mechanical I-PEP™ tools are available for pipe sizes from ¾ inch to 2 inches and use securing clamps for additional safety. Hydraulic I-PEP™ configurations cover larger sizes from 30 inches to 42 inches.
Engineering and testing standards
STATS Pipe End Plugs are designed in accordance with STATS engineering standards, based on recognised international codes, to facilitate testing in accordance with ASME B31.3 and similar piping codes.
The tools are designed around standard pipe dimensions, with interchangeable sealing arrangements available for pipe schedules covered by ASME B36.10 and ASME B36.19.
Technical specifications
- Maximum hydrostatic test pressure: Up to 350 bar / 5,076 psi, subject to tool specification
- E-PEP™ size range: 3 inches to 36 inches
- Mechanical I-PEP™ size range: ¾ inch to 2 inches
- Hydraulic I-PEP™ size range: 30 inches to 42 inches
- Test connection: Integrated through-port for filling, pressurisation and venting
- Sealing: High-performance elastomeric seal
- Grip configuration: Internal or external mechanical grip-lock assembly
